How to reduce heat loss through windows

With energy costs going through the roof, there’s never been a better reason for doing everything we can to make sure that our home retains as much of its precious heat as possible.

While heat can make its exit through the roof, the walls or the floor, one of its biggest escape routes is your windows.

Out of the window

Windows occupy around 20% of the surface area of building walls on average, which means that reducing heat loss through windows can help save you money on your energy bills and keep your home warm and comfortable.

For that reason, it’s important to ensure your windows are properly insulated and optimised for heat retention, especially during winter months.

In windows with substandard insulation, air leakage tends to be a major problem. More heat is lost due to heat convection through cavities and poor heat conduction through the windows frame.

Heat is also lost through the glass itself when the glass absorbs the heat generated inside and transmits it to the cooler air outside through conduction.

If your windows suffer from any of these problems, the obvious solution is to replace them with efficient double or triple glazed units.

Double or triple glazed?

The names are fairly self-explanatory. Double glazed windows have two panes of glass rather than just one, with both panes separated by an insulating air gap that acts as an extra layer of insulation.

With triple glazed windows you might actually notice quite a big difference in the way they increase the efficiency of your home by not allowing as much heat to escape. The additional pane can also further reduce levels of noise from the outside.

Another factor worth considering is that when it comes to insulation, the quality of your installation is just as important as the quality of the windows themselves. For various reasons it’s well worth investing in the best units you can afford.
