The Romans first began to use clear sheet glass for windows in the 1st century A.D. It was crude, irregular and not very transparent. While Romans were the first to use glass for purely functional purposes and so used coloured glass chips, as well as the Greeks, also to do mosaics on floors, walls, and ceilings.
This developed into using for windows, more commonly used in buildings of worship depicting scenes of significant religious narrative and figures. The coloured glass crafted into stained glass windows in which small pieces of glass are arranged to form patterns or pictures, and held together by strips of lead. In the beginning, colours were limited to blue, red, yellow, purple, and green – still stunning I think you’ll agree.
By 1900, stained glass and lead were being mass-produced so beautiful stained glass windows were being used for domestic use. A nationwide building boom created a high demand for stained glass windows and door panels.
