Four hacks to prep your home for autumn

What has potentially been the coldest summer on record for 24 years is coming to an end1 and it’s hard to believe shorter nights and cooler temperatures of autumn are just around the corner.

With autumn set to begin in the UK on September 22, premium window and door designer, The Residence Collection, have revealed four top tips to help get your home ready for the changing season.

  1. Clean away window mould and debris

July to September is prime for mould growth, due to lingering heavy rain and high humidity, so it’s a good idea to check your window frames and walls for mould spots before autumn begins. If you do find mould inside your home, use soapy water and an old cloth to remove, or consider treating the walls with white vinegar or a natural mould prevention spray.

Outside, this is your chance for one last window clean before wet, windy and cold weather sets in. Hose down your windows and frames to remove any collected debris, and get a streak free shine using soapy water or distilled vinegar.

  1. Make repairs to keep the cold out

Faulty locks, handles, seals and hinges on your windows might not be so noticeable during the warmer months, but as cold weather sets in, any air leaking in from faulty windows will make your home feel colder.

Before the start of autumn, check the quality of the fixtures and fittings of your windows to see what small repairs could get you through winter. Checking these in autumn not only offers better energy efficiency, but also improved ventilation to avoid condensation.

  1. Improve window insulation

Once your windows are repaired and fully functioning for the colder seasons, consider adding extras to improve insulation and help reduce the price of your energy bills too.

Keep the cold out and the heat in by installing weather strips and film. Weather strips are a quick and easy way to block any draughty gaps you missed during your seal repairs. If heat loss is happening through your glazing, window film can offer an extra layer of insulation and is a great alternative if window replacement isn’t an option.

  1. Window dressings for colder temperatures

Sheer and unlined curtains can be a fantastic addition to your home interiors during the summer months, but they don’t work in keeping heat out or in throughout the year. Think about hanging insulated curtains in the coldest rooms in your house before the temperature drops to give you an extra barrier against frosty weather.

Commenting, Jo Trotman, Marketing Manager at The Residence Collection comments: “It’s hard to believe that autumn is just around the corner, and with energy bills still high, many people are looking for ways to help insulate their homes before the weather turns.

“While some may need long term fixes like new windows, small maintenance and repairs of your windows can make a huge difference when thinking about the upcoming cold, harsh weather.”
