Four simple ways to style your home’s exterior for Christmas

With Christmas just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about how to decorate your home for the festive season. While interior decor often steals the spotlight, don’t forget to give the exterior of your home the festive attention it deserves.

From windows to doors and even your porch, creating a welcoming, elegant entrance can set the perfect tone for the festivities and so Jo Trotman, our Marketing Manager at The Residence Collection, shares four expert tips to help you dress the exterior of your home.

  1. Make a statement with a door wreath

“Your front door is the first thing visitors will see, so make sure it’s dressed to impress! A classic, festive wreath is a must-have for any front door, and there are countless styles to choose from.

“Opt for traditional evergreen wreaths adorned with pine cones, berries, orange slices and a ribbon for a timeless look. For a modern twist, choose a wreath with metallic accents, baubles, or even fairy lights for an extra touch of sparkle.

“To enhance the visual appeal, consider hanging your wreath at eye level with a beautiful satin or velvet ribbon that complements your door’s colour. This will set the tone of your home before anyone even steps inside.

  1. Illuminate your entryway with festive lights

“Lighting is perfect to creating a magical, festive atmosphere. For a chic and inviting look, frame your door and porch with soft, twinkling lights. String fairy lights around door frames, or wrap them around columns if you have a porch. For a more understated approach, try lanterns or LED candles placed along the steps or on either side of the door.

“If your home features entry steps, why not line them with small pre-lit Christmas trees or small lanterns, creating a welcoming path? Creating a festive grand entrance that’s perfect for the season.

  1. Add festive greenery to windows and porches

“In addition to wreaths, greenery is a wonderful way to enhance your windows and porch. Drape garlands of fresh pine or holly over your windows or frame the edges of your front door for a luxurious, festive feel. Why not add red baubles to the greenery, and entwine some fairy lights for that extra sparkle!

“For homes with larger porches, you can add potted evergreens or even a pair of outdoor planters filled with seasonal plants. Decorate them with ornaments, ribbons, or twinkling lights to bring everything together in a cohesive design.

  1. Keep it sophisticated with symmetry and balance

“When dressing the exterior of your home, it’s important not to go overboard. A tasteful, sophisticated look often relies on balance and symmetry. If you have double doors or a larger entryway, placing identical decorations on either side creates a harmonious and polished look.

“Keep your colour scheme consistent throughout, whether you opt for classic reds and golds, winter whites, or a modern metallic palette, tying all your decor elements together will elevate the overall look.

“The exterior of your home sets the tone for what’s inside, especially during the festive season. By paying attention to windows, doors, and porches, you can create a warm and inviting entrance that not only delights your guests but also brings Christmas cheer to those passing by.”
